It starts with a full vacuum: seats, carpet, under the seats, the seat tracks and the cargo area. The floor mats come out and get cleaned on their own, so the carpet underneath gets done properly too.

Then every surface gets scrubbed and wiped down. Dash, door panels, center console, cupholders, steering wheel, the trim pieces nobody touches. Interior windows are cleaned so you are not looking through a film at night. Last, a UV protectant goes on the panels to slow the sun fading and cracking that happens to cars parked outside all summer.

Some interiors need more than surface cleaning. If the seats or carpet are stained, that dirt is down in the fibers and a vacuum won’t reach it. The Premium Detail includes a deep shampoo of the full interior, along with a full exterior, clay bar, sealant and engine bay clean. It runs $399 for a sedan, $439 for a smaller SUV and $474 for a larger SUV or truck.

Half the year, every boot that gets in the car brings salt and slush with it. It soaks into the carpet, dries into white crust on the driver side and works its way under the mats. In summer it is sand, sunscreen and melted snacks. Add kids, dogs or a long commute and the cabin gets bad faster than most people notice.

The best time for a deep interior clean is in spring, once the salt season is over. If you want the car kept clean all year, a maintenance plan puts you on a weekly or monthly schedule.
